In BMX Race, the choice of good development is essential to optimize its starts, reminders and technical passages. At pride racing , we help you see more clearly, especially on an often overlooked point: the impact of the tire size on the development .
Development (also called Gear Ratio ) corresponds to the distance traveled at each complete pedal turn. It is influenced by three main elements:
the tray (number of teeth),
Pignon (number of teeth),
The real wheel diameter , which depends strongly on tire size Used.
but to go further, you have to distinguish two main ways of measuring this development:
1. Gear ratio (raw transmission ratio)
This is simply the relationship between the number of teeth on the tray and gable.
2. Gear inches
This is the transmission ratio multiplied by the real diameter of the wheel in inches .
• This gives a abstract value but useful to compare setups. Example: with a 20 "workforce tire and a 2.75 ratio → gear inches = 55"
The higher this figure, the more the bracquet is "long".
3. Roll out (development in meters or thumbs)

• ♂️ why is the size of the tire crucial?
two tires displaying the same nominal size (for example 20x1.75) can have different active diameters depending on the different mark, pressure or type of carcass. And this diameter directly influences the distance traveled by pedal turn.
1. Gear Inches
C’est le rapport de transmission multiplié par le diamètre réel de la roue en pouces.
• Cela donne une valeur abstraite mais utile pour comparer des setups.
• Exemple : avec un pneu de 20” effectif et un ratio de 2,75 → Gear Inches = 55”
Plus ce chiffre est élevé, plus le braquet est “long”.
2. Roll Out (développement en mètres ou pouces)
C’est la distance réellement parcourue au sol en un tour de pédale, en tenant compte de la circonférence du pneu.
• Plus parlant pour certains pilotes car exprimé en mètres ou en pouces parcourus.
• Exemple : Roll Out = ~172,1 pouces avec un setup 44x16 + pneu Tioga Powerblock.
En résumé :
Gear Inches = comparaison entre setups
Roll Out = distance réelle parcourue au sol
Deux pneus affichant la même taille nominale (par exemple 20 x 1.75) peuvent en réalité avoir des diamètres effectifs différents selon la marque, la pression de gonflage ou la construction de la carcasse. Et ce diamètre effectif influence directement le développement, c’est-à-dire la distance parcourue à chaque tour de pédale.
En d’autres termes :
Un pneu plus grand = développement plus long
Un pneu plus petit = développement plus court
